ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Objectives:
Gland
Hormones
Puberty
The endocrine system is made up of ductless glands (organs) located thought the body. These glands secret hormones (chemicals) that regulate the function of the human body. The hormones regulate functions such as: growth, development, fluid balances, acid balances, energy balances, control of stress, and reproduction (which is regulated by the ovaries and testis).
The organs that release these hormones are:
Pituitary Gland= located at the base of the brain (also called the Master Gland). It communicates with the glands and the brain.
Pineal Gland= Also located under the brain. This gland is a mystery, but is thought to regulate the sex glands.
Thyroid Glands= located either side of the larynx (throat). These glands control metabolism (activity levels).
Parathyroid Glands= small round glands attached to the thyroid. They regulate calcium concentrations of the body.
Thymus Gland= is located in the upper chest behind the sternum area. Regulates the Immune System.
Adrenal Glands= located above the kidneys They regulate cell function, stress, and some sexual hormones.
Pancreas= located to the right of the stomach. Control the insulin and glucose of the body.
Objectives:
- Explain the function of the endocrine system.
- Name the organs of the endocrine system.
