A refusal skill is a plan that you can use to help avoid doing the things you don’t want to do. Here are some refusal skills that might help you deal with peer pressure.
- Avoid Dangerous situations. If you think that a pressure or situation can cause injury or a problem, avoid it.
- Say No. Situations that come up that you haven’t planned for you can say no. Learn to say no, even when it is hard to do.
- Stand Your Ground. Be assertive, have self-confidence to defend your values and thoughts.
- Stay Focused on the Issue. Take time to go through your decision making skills and to use your own values.
- Walk Away. When saying no doesn’t work, you can always walk away.
- Support of Other People. A support system is a group of people, friends, or family, who promise to help you when thing get tough. When it is hard to say not, get your support group, there is strength in numbers.
