HAIR AND NAILS STUDY SHEET
Objectives:
Hair is on almost every part of your skin. Hair grows from follicles and is made from a material called keratin. Keratin’s strength allows hair to stick out from the surface of the skin. This help in two ways:
When you keep your hair neat and clean it helps your hair stay healthy. Wash your hair at least twice a week with a mild shampoo and warm water. You don’t want to dry out your scalp, don’t over wash it. A scalp that is dry can make flaky dried clumps of dead skin called dandruff. Another common hair problem is head lice. Head lice are small parasites that live on the scalp and suck blood. They lay eggs on the shafts of the hair. You can help get rid of lice with special shampoos. You can avoid head lice by not sharing combs, bushes and other items that transmit lice.
Nails
Nails grow from nail beds that begin under your skin, between the base of the nail and the knuckle closest to it. Nails are also made from keratin. In your nail the keratin forms in layers. Your nails help to protect your sensitive fingers and toe ends. They also come in handy for scratching and picking up things. The cuticle is a thin flap of skin that is around the nail. If it becomes too dry it sometimes cracks. Lotion can help keep your hands and cuticles moist and healthy.
Nail Care
It is important to keep your nails trimmed and cleaned so they don’t collect dirt and germs. Wash your hands regularly and remember to clean both your fingernails and toenails. Always use clippers or scissors to trim your nails and not your teeth, so you avoid getting germs into your mouth.

- It keeps you warm. Because hair traps air near your skin it lets the air work to help insulate you and keep you warm.
- Hair helps you sense the world around you. When something touches the hair on your skin the nerve endings near the base of the hair let you know something is close to you.
