Alcohol is a liquid that can affect the way people think and act when they drink it. Alcohol is a depressant. Alcohol causes the body functions to slow down. When a person mixes alcohol and other drugs it can be very dangerous. It can even cause liver damage in some cases. Alcohol enters the stomach just like food. It is absorbed into the blood stream. The more alcohol that you consume the stronger the reaction to the alcohol. At first the person may just feel light headed or dizzy. It can slow a person’s reactions and affect decision-making. If enough is consumed the body will start to react to alcohol the same way a person who has taken a poison. They begin to vomit. The vomiting stops more of the alcohol from passing into the body. A person sometimes passes out. This may even save the person’s life. Sometimes body functions slow down so much that the person dies from alcohol poisoning.
When a person drinks too much they are sometimes said to be drunk or wasted. These are just other terms for being intoxicated. Intoxication is the state of being affected by alcohol. We can measure the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood. The percentage of alcohol in a person’s blood is called the blood alcohol concentration or BAC.
