Stimulants are drugs that speed up the body functions. They can raise heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. They can cause stroke and heart attacks and even death. Cocaine and crack are examples of stimulants.
Depressants are drugs that slow the body down. They make it hard for the body to pump blood and get oxygen. They drop the heart rate and lower breathing. They can cause breathing failure, coma, and death. Alcohol and sleeping pills are examples of depressants.
Hallucinogens are drugs that make people see and hear things that don’t exist. This can cause people to do dangerous things. They also cause anxiety and depression.
Opiates are drugs that are made from poppy flowers. Some opiates are used as medicine to treat severe pain. They slow heart rate, breathing and brain activity. Heroin is an illegal opiate that can be fatal.
