ILLEGAL DRUGS
MARIJUANA = Marijuana was once grown in Missouri as a cash crop. Probably not how you think. At one time long ago people used hemp rope to tie up their crops, pull up water from their wells, tie up their goods on the wagons they drove to and from town, and tether their animals. They didn’t have manmade nylon ropes like today. Missouri raised marijuana for it’s hemp to make ropes. Somewhere along the way someone started smoking the leaf of the plant and now it is against the law to grow or have marijuana in Missouri, and throughout most states in the United States.
Marijuana has be called many things such as: pot (because people grew the plant in pots in their homes), grass (it is a form of grass), weed (it looks like a weed), bud, Mary-Jane (a code word by marijuana users. A cigarette of marijuana is called a joint. Marijuana is also known as the gateway drug (because it leads to other drug use), and sometimes call the “Peter Pan” drug (because it slows down learning).
Marijuana is psychologically addictive and some feel it may be physically addictive. It contains a chemical called THC, which stays in the body for a least a month.
Some of the affects of this drug are: Nervousness (marijuana is a stimulant that causes agitation to the neurons, and yet pulls the neurons apart which causes, a decreased attention span, and lack of learning). It raises the heart rate, is harmful to the immune system, which causes a higher risk for infections. It damages the lungs, and has 5 times the cancer causing properties of a normal cigarette.
INHALANTS = Inhalants are chemical products that have strong chemical smells. One of the attractions of inhalants is that you can get anywhere and you don’t have to use a drug dealer to get them. Some examples of inhalants are: paint, paint thinners, gasoline, nail polish, sharpies, and common house hold cleaners. More people die the first time they try inhalants than any other drug. Users of inhalants are called “Huffers”, because they huff the chemicals into their lungs. These cuts off oxygen to the brain and other organs causing these affects: Dizziness, nosebleeds, headaches, and death. Breathing these fumes can make the heart stop in minutes. If someone lives through the experience they can suffer damages to : the brain, kidneys, liver, lungs and other organs of the body.
ANABOLIC STEROIDS = Steroids are naturally made by the human body. Anabolic steroids that are abused to improve athletic abilities are not natural and are illegal. Some athletes uses them to give them a competitive edge in strength and speed. Because they are injected into the body it can cause some dangerous side effects, such as: fast weight gain and muscle growth, serious acne, high blood pressure, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, brain, liver and kidney tumors, increase in dangerous behavior (it alters the mood), it can stunt growth, enlarge breasts on men, shrink genitals on men (these are irreversible after stopping drug use), cause facial hair and lowering of the voice of women.
HALLUCINOGENS = Hallucinogens are drugs that affect your senses. They make you hear, see and feel things that aren’t really there. Some hallucinogens are natural and are found in certain mushrooms. Others are manmade, and are known as LSD. They cause anxiety and depression, and dangerous behavior, because the user can’t tell what is real or what is a hallucination.
OPIATES = Are drugs made from poppy flowers. Some opiates are used as medicine to treat severe pain. They are a depressant and slow the heart rate, breathing and brain activity. Opiates are very addictive. Heroin is an example of an illegal opiate that can be fatal. The withdraw from opiates is painful and often causes death.
METH = A man made drug that is a stimulant. It is so addictive that one time of use can cause addition. It works on the central nervous system. It is highly poisonous and rots the body of the user. This ages them, causes sores on the skin, rots the teeth, and stimulates the body so it loses weight. It alters the mood, and causes a type of insanity to the user.
STIMULATES = Are drugs that speed up body functions. They raise the heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. They can cause stroke, heart attacks and even death. Some examples of stimulates are: caffeine (this is a mild stimulate, but addictive), nicotine, diet pills (speed), cocaine, meth, and marijuana.
DEPRESSANTS = Are drugs that slow the body functions down. They make it hard for the body to pump blood and get oxygen. They drop the heart rate and lower breathing. They can cause breathing failure, coma and death. Some examples of depressants’ are: Alcohol, sleeping pills, muscles relaxers, and pain medications.
