Tobacco has been used and exported since the early settlers came to this country. Tobacco is a plant with leaves that when dried and mixed with chemicals is used to make products such as cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and cigars. People sometimes use tobacco to help them relax. It sometimes effects both the body and the mind. Because of these effects it is considered a drug. Not all people are affected the same. Tobacco can be a slow acting drug as far as long term effects are concerned. It may take years for the effects to show up.
The chemicals in tobacco are dangerous to the human body. Tobacco may contain hundreds of chemicals. Nicotine is one of the chemicals found in tobacco. Nicotine is an addictive drug. It’s properties cause people to want more tobacco. Carbon monoxide and tar are found in tobacco products. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas. When the smoke is inhaled, the lungs then absorb the carbon monoxide. This gas keeps the body form getting enough oxygen. The tar is a black sticky substance that coats the lungs. It can block oxygen too, and keeps the body from filtering out harmful particles in the air.
Although the effects of tobacco use may not show up right away, even the first cigarette is harmful. Just one puff leaves chemicals in the mouth, throat, and lungs. Other effects of tobacco are:
· Dulled tastebuds
· Yellow teeth and fingers
· Wrinkled skin
· Bad breath
· Smelly clothes and hair
· Shortness of breath
· Heart disease
· Cancer
· Lung diseases (emphysema)
Smoking is also harmful to other people. Environmental tobacco smoke is a mixture of exhaled smoke and smoke from the ends of lit cigarettes. ETS, is sometimes called secondhand smoke. Nonsmokers who breathe ETS can get a build up of chemicals in their lungs. Smokeless tobacco comes in two forms, snuff and chewing tobacco. It can cause loss of smell, sores in mouth, tooth decay, loss of taste and cancer. Cancer is a disease in which groups of cells grow uncontrollably.
