There are six essential nutrients that the body needs to maintain good health. They are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are nutrients that give your body energy. The energy that you get from these nutrients is measured in units called calories. The other nutrients do not contain calories but help the other nutrients be used by the body. That is why it is so important that you get a variety of different foods in your diet each day.
1. Carbohydrate is a chemical that is made up of one or more sugars chained together and is major source of energy for the body. The two types of carbohydrates are sugars and starches. There are simple carbohydrates and complexed carbohydrates. An example of a food high in carbohydrates would be table sugar, honey, bread, rice and pasta.
2. Proteins help repair body tissue and build muscle. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Your body breaks down the proteins you eat into amino acids. The body uses these amino acids to build new protein. A good source of protein can be found in chicken, fish, pork, beef, beans nuts, cheese, eggs and soymilk.
3. Fats are a highly concentrated source of stored energy. Fats help the body store some vitamins and help the body produce hormones. Your body only needs fat in small amounts to work properly. Fats can be found in cooking oils, butter, salad dressings, and sour cream, meats and other food prepared with oils and butters. Most desserts are high in fats.
4. Vitamins are organic compounds that control your body functions. They help use the energy provided by other nutrients. Vitamins are necessary for good health. They can be found in fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, and dairy products.
5. Minerals are elements that are necessary for good health because they too regulate body functions. Minerals can be found in many kinds of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
6. Water is the most important nutrient. Without water even for a couple of days the body could die. More than half of your body is made of water. Your body needs water to maintain body functions. It also helps maintain body temperature and eliminates poisons in the body.
