CIRCULATORY STUDY SHEET
Objectives:
Terms to Know:
The circulatory system carries many materials to the body in your blood. Blood is composed of plasma, platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells. Each part of the blood has a job to perform in the circulatory system. Plasma is a liquid that is mostly water. The body's cells absorb water from the plasma. Platelets help clot the blood if a blood vessel becomes injured. White blood cells help fight infection and prevent disease. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body.
Blood is carried to the body in blood vessels, which are hollow tubs of tissue. An artery, is a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. A blood vessel that carries blood to the heart is a vein. A capillary is a tiny blood vessel that carries blood from arteries to veins. capillaries are very small.
Oxygen is only one of many materials that blood carries through the body. Blood also carries nutrients from the digestive system to body's cells. Blood carries waste products, such as carbon dioxide, away from cells.
THE HEART AND THE PATHWAY OF CIRCULATION
The heart is a muscle that contracts to pump blood through the blood vessels. The heart is made up of four hollow chambers which are: the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle.
Objectives:
- Explain the purpose of the circulatory system
- Name the parts of the circulatory system
- Describe how the circulatory system works
- Trace the pathway of blood through the heart

- Blood returning from the body enters the Right Atrium (from the Superior and inferior Vena Cava)
- Blood then travels into the Right Ventricle
- Blood is then pumped to the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged (by way of the Pulmonary Artery)
- Blood is then carried to the Left Atrium (by way of the Pulmonary Vein)
- Then the blood is pumped to the Left Ventricle
- Finally the blood is pumped to the body by way of the Aorta.
